Yet baldness is generally not anywhere near as common in wild animals as it is with humans, says Desmond Tobin, a professor of cell biology at the University of Bradford in England. After all, a healthy coat of hair is often critical to keeping warm or camouflaging in the wild.

One of the biggest conservation challenges facing hairless chimpanzees is habitat loss and fragmentation. Like their haired counterparts, hairless chimpanzees live in dense forests, rapidly disappearing due to human activities such as logging, agriculture, and mining. As their habitat shrinks, hairless chimpanzees become more isolated from each other and are at risk of losing genetic diversity, which could ultimately threaten their survival as a species. There is no hair on a chimpanzee’s face, hands, or feet, but the rest of its body is covered with either long black or brown hair.

Hairless Parrot

The Wildlife Waystation, an animal refuge located outside of Los Angeles, unexpectedly closed in 2019 due to financial difficulties. At the time of closure, 42 chimpanzees, most of them formerly used in medical research, were living there, along with over 430 other wild and domestic animals. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife took over operations and successfully rehomed most of the animals, except the chimpanzees. Obviously, this is far from the only reason why humans might have lost our thick body hair. Darwin suggested that hairy humans would have risked overheating in the open African savannah, and naked skin cools more easily through sweating.
Taking them from their natural habitat has caused a decline in their populations. People also hunt chimps for food (bushmeat) or to protect their crops from being eaten by hungry chimps. These conditions, plus loss of habitat, have resulted in the chimpanzee being endangered.
