This Melrose Coffee Shop Makes Some of LAs Most Inventive Food Eater LA

The two-level coffee shop will also feature beer from the Port City Brewing Co. and cider from Lost Dog Cidery — as the final license hurdles are cleared. The Oaxacan mocha is the most popular drink at BLVD MRKT’s Cafe Santo. This Oaxacan coffee bar is stationed right at the entry to the shipping container food hall and serves brioche french toast, breakfast sandwiches, and quiche as well. WAFI Coffee is named after the West African Farmers Initiative, a collective of West African farmers who supply the beans for this roving bicycle coffee bar. Co-founder Dennis Garsinii rides all over LA serving espressos and Americanos on a custom bike. Misha's new location will begin serving wine from this list soon on its second floor.

The intensity, extreme focus, and long, repetitive services are often said to be required of fine dining kitchens; Castro wants to think differently. He knows that kind of work often leads to burnout among the kitchen ranks, a feeling he’s personally familiar with. Coffee Coffee, Castro believes, gives promising young cooks an outlet to continue to work at a high level with ingredients, but with much less pressure. Quentin Tarantino re-opened the Vista Theater in 2023 and debuted Pam’s Coffy in February 2024.

Some things deserve time, care, and attention to detail. At Misha’s, we think coffee is one of those things. Our beans are hand-picked, hand-roasted in small batches every day, by a master (and mistress) roaster. “It was more intense, and I had to learn how to focus in that environment. I took a lot of notes.” He went on to stage at Le Bernardin in New York City, an unpaid position that saw him working seven days straight, with 16 hour shifts. Undaunted by the demands of fine dining at the time, Castro says that Eric Ripert helped him solidify his career choice.

The film director paid homage to iconic actress Pam Grier and named the place after her 1973 American blaxploitation film, Coffy. Pam’s Coffy uses Tarantino’s custom beans made by Jones Coffee Roasters. The new Prince Street location has the vibe of the original. Large, brightly colored paintings by artist Kirsten Avne decorate the walls, and the carefully crafted jazz playlist is reassuringly stellar. It’s also got more electrical outlets, and soon outdoor seating will extend to the end of the block. After two years in development, Misha’s Coffee opened its second location in Old Town over the weekend.

Those who grew up in LA will highly appreciate the LAUSD-esque coffee cake. The colorful facade, warm interior, and honey lavender lattes are what make Bloom & Plume one of LA’s most stylish coffee bars. Co-owner Maurice Harris has ample skill as an artist and floral designer and obsesses over both in his Historic Filipinotown cafe. Food is available too, including gluten-free vegan doughnuts and a bacon biscuit sandwich.

Make time to try the dine-in coffee service presented on ornate wooden trays. A local favorite, Rose Park Roasters has three locations throughout Long Beach. If ordering from the Fourth Street outlet, take a seat and enjoy the floor-to-ceiling windows and house-made pastries. Find beer and wine by the can or bottle at the Pine Street location.

It has also freed up Castro and his crew to cook the kind of food that makes them happy, and still be home in time for dinner with their families. Though the coffee drinks are the specialty at Tilt, the matcha and other tea offerings are extensive. Located on the bottom floor of the Medallion apartments, Tilt is the place for coffee enthusiasts who crave good service and are in the mood for a strong single-origin cold brew. The coffee at Koreatown’s Memorylook is as excellent as its matcha lattes, giant matcha brulee, and tiramisu doughnuts. Memorylook is an ideal cafe to work from with indoor and outdoor seating, but gets incredibly busy, so plan accordingly.

It is worth the trek to Orange County’s Little Saigon for Trung Nguyên Legend Café. Vietnam’s legendary cafe opened in 2023 and serves phin- (coffee made with a Vietnamese filter) and espresso-based coffee drinks using Vietnamese-grown robusta and arabica beans from Buôn Ma Thuột. Everything tastes smooth without an ounce of coffee bean bitterness.

Culver City's modernist Cognoscenti Coffee started in 2009 and is staffed by friendly baristas who know everything about coffee. Cognoscenti doesn’t use fancy drink names and focuses on producing quality drip coffee, cappuccino, lattes, and cold brew in the Fashion District, Downtown LA, and Culver City. The popular coffee shop with the orange cups first opened on South Patrick Street in 1991 in Old Town and expanded there before moving to its King Street location. The new shop is located in a prime spot next to Waterfront Park at 6 Prince Street, and around the corner to Big Wheel Bikes and Chadwicks.

Owner Gacia Tachejian starts with ethically sourced beans, roasts them in-house, and develops one tasty maple oat latte at both locations. Robinson said he expects to start serving beer and wine as early as next week. While a bit smaller than the 917 King Street location, also in Old Town, the new coffee house features seating on two floors. The new Misha's features a rooftop deck and will soon be serving beer and wine. Coffee Coffee delights in welcoming a sun-up customer base that comes in for caffeine and cafe bites. Castro and owner Hernandez run a sustainable, cost-effective operation, he believes, that still manages to push the limits on what some diners might think is possible for this stretch of Melrose.

Highly Likely keeps things light during daytime hours with breakfast and lunch fare, plus a robust coffee menu prepared by Dayglow’s Emily Elmore from 8 a.m. Coffee drinks are available any time of day and are best enjoyed on the pleasant patio if the weather permits. If headed to Community Goods during busy hours, settle into the line with a book or a podcast. The queue is consistent, as are the stellar coffee drinks like the einspänner latte with sweetened cream, cocoa powder, double espresso, and a pinch of salt.

Take the papas y frijoles, a local favorite, created with black beans cooked with garlic and aromatics along with crispy potatoes from Weiser Farms and a poached egg. This dish fills the typical lunch crowd but is offered without meat. At $17, it’s not inexpensive by most standards, but the lack of animal protein — particularly the kind that Castro would source — helps to keep the cost more in line.

The second floor opens onto a rooftop deck with seating and umbrellas and views of surrounding Old Town and the waterfront. Robinson said he hopes to possibly add sidewalk seating in the future. Saturday morning, he set up signs as the sun was rising, near the water, to let walkers know where they could find their morning coffee. Stuart Robinson, manager of Misha's, pauses for a photo Saturday from the new location's rooftop deck.

That’s a common order around Los Angeles these days, as more daytime restaurants and coffee shops blur their lines to offer a bit of both worlds — espresso drinks, an all-day menu, and maybe even some WiFi. The difference with an order like this at Melrose’s Coffee Coffee, though, is apparent as soon as the food hits the table. Castro and Hernandez wanted this new venture to be approachable, cost-sensitive, and to carry excellent coffee all while making financial sense for the partners, too.

Try the teas, espressos, and lavender lattes from 7 a.m. For those not near Hollywood, find additional locations in Exposition Park, Baldwin Hills, and Jefferson Park/West Adams. Los Angeles’s coffee scene is as distinct as its 75 miles of coastline and majestic mountains. Operators obsessed with sourcing the finest coffee beans and mastering roasting and brewing techniques mean that the city’s caffeine culture will continue to thrive.
